As personal trainers, we are in an area where the health and fitness industry is truly growing along with technology. There are also new up-and-coming personal trainers who are excited to join us in the fight against obesity and chronic illness. But, what you may not know is that your new certification doesn’t teach you is how to effectively gain and retain clients, and in this article I will give new personal trainers a clear idea as to how to be the best in your field.

Business Plan

As a personal trainer, you have to wear many hats in order to be successful. You have to know who you are and what you’re trying to achieve. As a new trainer, you’re excited and all you want to do initially is train clients, but if you don’t have a blue print of how you want things done, then you won’t be very successful. Here’s what you need to take into account as a starting blue print: knowing how much you want to make per client/class, how to schedule clients, continuing education to remain competitive, vacations and/or slow periods, working on programming, calling clients, and of course personal time building your mind and body.

Master your craft

There are so many different areas of fitness where you can excel in and being the best in one specific area will set you apart from the competition. Whether you choose sports performance, weight loss, rehab, and or nutrition, the key is educating and applying yourself so you can get the best results from your clients and build your reputation.

Mentorship

Like my mentor Todd Durkin, C.S.C.S. and Owner of Fitness Quest10 said, you have to”surround yourself with great people;” ones that are better than you and ones that are willing to guide you in the right direction.

As a new personal trainer in an industry that has so many great trainers, you want to know how the best trainers do great and it’s your job to find someone you look up. Do your research and find a mentorship program that will excel your learning and ability to become an awesome trainer with the right guidance.

Knowing your Market

It only makes sense to know where your clients are from and what is the annual income of your target area. As a new trainer, your job is to build your brand and get the best results out of your clients. From personal experience, the best way to earn top dollar is by first giving away time to people in your gym. Why? Because you can build your reputation, and once everyone sees the results from your walking billboards (in-shape clients!), they will surely follow. Another great way to kickstart your income is by training small groups. If you want to earn 70+ dollars a session, calculate how many people you need to train in an hour to hit your goals. Honestly it’s a little more work, but it’s still only an hour of your time.

Marketing & Social Media

How else can you gain new clients and exposure as a new personal trainer? Well, here are some alternative ways you can get the word out: get involved in your community, church or youth league, offer your services and let everyone know that you’re the fitness expert in the area. The more you can get the word out the better.

Everything today can be seen by the click of a button, so why not sell your business on social media? It’s another great way to get exposure. Start by showing your audience before and after photos of willing clients, videos of workouts they can do with you or at home, motivational pictures and messages – people want to see real. What people don’t want to see is you posting photos of you all day, showing off your face or biceps, unless there is a achievable, relevant message behind your selfies.

These are just a few areas that will have a direct affect on how well you do as a personal trainer. How much time and energy you devote to mastering your craft and business will determine the success of your business. Remember, be patient and continue to learn from the best in the industry, their mistakes will be your gain.
