In many cases, the best thing you can do to help a client recover from a musculoskeletal-related injury, or decrease the likelihood of an injury occurring in the first place, is to get them moving and condition proper biomechanics.
Topical analgesics are a great way to slightly reduce the pain signal so your clients can make it through their rehab exercises or just get out for a walk.
Now the pain signal is obviously important, so we don’t want clients ignoring the information their bodies are trying to share with them. But with many conditions, a topical analgesic is a much safer and healthier option to reduce pain and increase movement.
Here are a few suggestions to help explain and discuss topical analgesics with clients . . .
PAIN GATE THEORY
Pain happens when your receptors send a signal from the source of pain to your brain. Cold sensations, like menthol, stimulate receptors to block those signals to relieve pain.
